Fellowship Program
Aims
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) has created a Fellowship Program that allows it to support specific projects that are of particular interest to CyI but carried out at other institutions. The Program supports Post-Doctoral Fellows working on behalf of CyI, on projects defined by CyI, and with a CyI affiliation.
Modalities
From time to time, CyI may decide that a specific project, driven by the CyI scientific agenda and of particular importance to CyI, would best be carried out at another institution. It will then issue a call for proposals, including specific aims and deliverables, open to senior investigators worldwide. The call will specify the number of fellowships that can be funded, the duration of the expected contracts, as well as potential provisions for additional support in the form of travel, consumables, overheads or other expenses. A concise but comprehensive form for the submissions of proposals will be provided.
The submitted proposals will be evaluated by a Committee of experts in the relevant field, designated by CyI, in full compliance with the hiring policies of the Institute. Criteria for evaluation will include the scientific quality of the proposal, its relevance to the CyI project goals, the reputation of the host laboratory, and the credentials of the Fellow chosen to carry out the work. The amount awarded to successful proposals will be adjusted to prevailing academic salaries in the host country. Recipients of CyI Fellowships will be expected to list the Cyprus Institute as an academic affiliation on any publications resulting from the work performed while being funded by CyI. They will also be invited to come to the Cyprus Institute at least once a year to discuss their research and present their results. If the Fellows are engaged in a degree-granting program, the granting institution can be either the CyI or the host institution.
Funding and monitoring
The CyI Fellowships will be funded from the budgets allocated to the specific Projects that will benefit from the work carried out by the Fellows. The recipients will be expected to provide biannual progress reports to the Project Leader at CyI, and continued funding will be contingent on satisfactory progress being made on the Project.
Publication
The calls for proposals will be published on the CyI Web site and advertised in electronic media reaching the scientific community in the relevant scientific area. It is expected that with time the CyI Fellowships will become prestigious awards recognizing excellence in young scientists.
