Future Research Centers
In total seven Research Centers will be established, the three active Research Centers are the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).
The following four Centers will be developed in the near future:
- The Biological Sciences and Human Health Research Center (BSHHRC)
- The Center is envisioned to have a strong grounding in fundamental biology, addressing issues pertinent to the region including the study of diseases prevalent in the Eastern Mediterranean and the developing world. This Research Center is expected to provide the core faculty in Biological Sciences for the Graduate College of the Cyprus Institute. It is expected to have close ties with the Center for Energy, Environment and Water Research, and the Center for Economic Development.
Prof. A. Georgopoulos (Prof. of Neurology, Physiology and Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota) graciously agreed to act as the Coordinator of the Task Force which will define the scope of the Center. Other Task Force members include Nobel Laureate Prof. H. Varmus and the Chairman of the European Research Council Prof. F. Kafatos. - Technology, Management and Finance Research Center (TMFRC)
- The Center will pursue innovative approaches that integrate private and public sector management into a joint educational and research program. Its scope will extend beyond business and public administration to the management of scientific and technological institutions and enterprises both in knowledge-based economies but also in those characterized by scarcity, diversity and conflict. As such, it will be closely tied with the Center for Economic Development.
- The Economic Development Research Center (EDRC)
- The portfolio of the Center will include research on the advancement of economic policies, management strategies and the use of key technologies for development and conflict resolution, focusing on problems in Southern Europe, the Balkans, the Near and Middle East and North Africa. Its aim is to identify the causes of conflict and propose technological approaches for their alleviation, drawing on the resources of CyI Research Centers.
- The Information, Communication and Computation Research Center (ICCRC)
- This Center will focus on issues in the area of Information Science, Engineering and Telecommunications as they pertain to the region's multicultural and multilingual environment, and to its disparate levels of development. The Center will take advantage of the strategic location of Cyprus and of its excellent infrastructure.
