Signing of a memorandum of understanding between The Cyprus Institute and Donetsk National Technical University (DNTU)

CyI DonNTU 121110In the context of the official visit of the Ukrainian President Mr. Viktor Yanukovych to Cyprus, The Cyprus Institute and Donetsk National Technical University signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement will contribute to the enhancement of scientific cooperation between Cyprus and Ukraine.

The Cyprus Institute and Donetsk National Technical University (DNTU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, 8 November in Nicosia. The Agreement was signed during the official visit of the Ukrainian President to Cyprus, in the presence of President Christophias and President Yanukovych. It should be viewed in the broader context of the effort by both governments to enhance scientific research cooperation between Cyprus and Ukraine.

Donetsk National Technical University was represented by Prof. Balabanov, Rector of the University of Marioupolis, and The Cyprus Institute by its President Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas. Besides the Presidents of Cyprus and Ukraine, the ceremony was attended by official delegations of both countries.

The Agreement between the two institutes will facilitate the implementation of joint research projects in environment, energy, the use of high-performance computers in the basic and engineering sciences, information technology, archaeology and cultural heritage studies.

Donetsk National Technical University was founded in 1921 and is the largest higher education institution in Donbass region. The university has approx. 20000 students at 14 faculties and on 55 specialities. The Cyprus Institute is a research and educational institution aiming to address problems of regional significance. The main priorities of its research agenda are regional climate predictions and impact assessment, utilisation of solar energy for electricity production and water desalination, applications of science and technology to Cultural Heritage, and the development of high‐performance computing and simulation science.
