The Greek Ambassador visits The Cyprus Institute

The Greek Ambassador Mr. Vasilis Papaioannou visited The Cyprus Institute’s premises in Athalassa Campus on Wednesday, 26th June. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Vangelis Tsolkas, Secretary of the Embassy.

During the meeting the President of the Institute, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas, presented its overall vision and achievements and briefed the Ambassador about the progress on its strategic development plan. Particular emphasis was given to the significant achievements in the areas of Solar Energy and Desalination, Climate Change, Computational Science and preservation of Cultural Heritage. These scientific areas highlight the regional nature of the Institute and establish it as a leading research institution in the Eastern Mediterranean. Reference was also made on the existing collaborations between The Cyprus Institute and Greek universities and research centers as well as on the prospects of further collaborations. Mr. Papaioanou visited a number of research laboratories of the Institute where research staff presented some CyI’s main research activities.

The two parties agreed that Cyprus and Greece face common challenges in various fields and through effective and closer scientific cooperation the two countries can develop joint actions for addressing a variety of problems. Furthermore, it was stressed that the existing cooperation between the Institute and Greek institutions should continue and be further strengthened.

The Greek Ambassador stated that despite the challenges Cyprus is facing due to the financial crisis the country should maintain a strong presence in the international arena. Cyprus through CyI and its pioneering research takes its place at the high table of research.
