The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment at The Cyprus Institute

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Nicos Kouyialis visited The Cyprus Institute’s premises in Athalassa Campus on Thursday, 26February.

During the meeting CyI President, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas presented the Institute’s overall vision and achievements and briefed the Ministerabout the progress on its strategic development plan. Particular emphasis was given to the significant achievements in the areas of Energy related projects, Climate Change Research and Computational Science. These scientific areas highlight the regional nature of the Institute and establish it as a leading research institution in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Minister visited a number of laboratories of the Institute, where CyI staff presented some of its main research activities. Mr Kouyialis stressed that CyI is a leading educational and research center and the government should support its excellent work. Already the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment cooperates with CyI on areas related to energy, environment and water resources. The Minister mentioned, that soon the institute may offer applied methods needed to face the challenge of climate change with the help of its innovative research technology.

The President of the Institute, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas stated that CyI activities focus on certain key issues in our country and the broader region, aiming to deepen its activities in these areas to be internationally known; also the visit of the Minister gives the opportunity to tighten CyI collaboration with government bodies for the benefit of Cyprus’ economy on the basis of research directly connected to our country’s development. On behalf of CyI’s Board of Trustees, Honorary Trustee Dr Petros Kareklas, was present.
