Technology serves the arts
The Cyprus Institute's, Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), recently made a significant contribution to the creation of the sculpture «Clepysdra 2009» which adorns the new Larnaca airport. The art work belongs to the famous Cypriot artist Theodoulos Gregoriou whose work was recently hosted at the Louvre museum.
A collaboration agreement between the artist and STARC was established in May. And subsequently, STARC successfully digitally scanned five ancient statue heads from the Archaeological museum in Nicosia. Using state-of-art technologies STARC preformed various tests on a virtual model, instead of a physical object, resulting in a three dimensional model, which was used to mould the creation of the final sculpture.
Theodoulos Gregoriou, whilst talking about his recent project said that he was accustomed to using technology in creating his works of art, and in this particular case he found it necessary to use the technological process undertaken by the Cyprus Institute. He also explained that “the electronic machine that made the cut has left its mark as its own character in the development of the head. This is very important as I feel it is a modern imprint on the layers of time.”
In turn, Professor Franco Niccolucci, the Director of STARC stated that “We at STARC are proud to have participated in the creation of a masterpiece, the first image that visitors will see on their arrival to Cyprus. It shows how powerful and creative computer technology can be. An example, where high tech imaging shaped the creation of a modern sculpture."
