The Cyprus Institute (CyI, www.cyi.ac.cy), is a novel non-profit science and technology research and educational institution, located in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Reporting to the President and serving on the executive cabinet, the Vice President for Research will play a pivotal and active role in the success of the institution.

The Vice President for Research will provide line supervision for the Research Centers of the Institute. The supervision of these activities is carried out in accordance with policies and guidelines set forth by the Institute.

The Vice President for Research will work in Cyprus, and will be offered a professorial appointment with tenure, with an internationally attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate to his/her high degree of responsibility and qualification.

The Vice President for Research will be responsible for continuing the growth in the Institute's research mission through vision and leadership; building alliances with business and governmental entities that lead to increased resources for the Institute; coordinating the activities of the Institute in the area of research, promoting selected research opportunities, and identifying national trends in which the Institute should participate; directing efforts of the Office of Sponsored Research; overseeing the efforts of the Institute’s Research Centers; working with industries, state and local agencies to support research projects; recommending research policies to the President; and supporting technology transfer and economic development activities of the Institute.

In detail, the overall objectives, duties and responsibilities of the Vice President for Research will be the following:

·    To promote the development of The Cyprus Institute as a novel research and educational institution.
·    To aid in the creation new fields of study, with particular relevance to the research fields defined by the region’s needs and the Board of Trustees decisions.
·    To lead, enable and support research initiatives and activity in The Cyprus Institute.
·    He/she will have chain of command authority and responsibility for the development and coordination of all Cyprus Institute research activity.  He/she reports directly and solely to the President of the Institute.
·    He/she oversees the recruitment of all research staff at all positions; if approval by the President or the Board is required, he/she has responsibility to recommend to the President accordingly.
·    He/she recruits and recommends the discontinuation of the employment of research staff with Institute wide appointments. These include, inter alia, the evaluation of staff performance, the definition and modification of their duties, responsibilities and authorities, and the handling of all matters related to or incidental to their employment and work welfare.
·    He/she develops The Cyprus Institute research strategy within the strategic and policy guidelines set down by the Board and the President.  He/she coordinates the Research Strategy of the various Centers of the Institute in collaboration with the Directors of the Centers and he/she develops the overall research budget of the Institute.
·    He/she implements all Cyprus Institute strategy policies and all instructions for which he/she has been granted appropriate and adequate authority; he/she establishes and maintains links with and between the Cyprus Institute’s research sponsors.
·    He/she coordinates, identifies and pursues sources of funding of Research for The Cyprus Institute, and he/she makes recommendations to the President on financial and other commitments of The Cyprus Institute as be deems necessary, for The Cyprus Institute’s welfare.
·    He/she takes all appropriate action for the local and international promotion and recognition of The Cyprus Institute.

The incumbent should be an outstanding individual with strong leadership qualities, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in research management. He/she must have a scientific record of the highest international level, a strong vision of the role of research and of the importance of science and technology capacity building in Europe and in the Eastern Mediterranean. Previous responsibility for institution building and/or managing complex projects from development to implementation would be a strong advantage.

The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, with strong capacities for managing human resources, and for generating and maintaining contacts in the academic, business and governmental circles, as well as obtaining support from them for the Institute. Proficiency in spoken and written English is indispensable, while knowledge of the Greek language would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
