Workshop: Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observations in the Mediterranean
**Postponed due to European airspace situation**
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) or Autonomous Flying Platforms are increasingly seen as important and effective research tools in the Earth and atmospheric sciences. While having previously mainly been used for atmospheric measurements, the potential of UASs for assessing and monitoring Earth-surface properties and processes is increasingly recognized.
The Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observations project (APAESO; http://eewrc.cyi.ac.cy/APAESO/APAESO) is aimed at the dual purpose of carrying out atmospheric and earth-surface observations in Cyprus and the (eastern) Mediterranean and is being carried out by the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) of the Cyprus Institute (CyI). It is being funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF).
The workshop is organized by EEWRC under the auspices of COST Action ES0802 and will be hosted by the Cyprus Institute. It will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus between 19 and 23 April 2010. The workshop will be followed by regular WG and MC meetings of COST Action ES0802.
Workshop Agenda (in brief, tentative)
19 – 21 April 2010
(i) Dual-purpose UASs for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observations; the APAESO project
(ii) Review of dual-purpose UASs and discussion of their possible utilization in the (eastern) Mediterranean (and elsewhere).
(iii) Discussions on UAS components: possible platforms, observational modules, avionics
(iv) Aspects related to operations of UASs: flight permissions, communication, ground facilities
(v) Requirements and needs of the user community
(vi) Open discussion on future collaborations with other UAS initiatives, proposed scientific projects, ideas for new instruments to be utilized in APAESO and optional Action Items.
22 – 23 April 2010
COST Action ES0802 Working Group and Managing Committee meeting
Attendance by invitation only.
