The Cyprus Institute is already looking forward to the Solar Car Challenge of 2012! The race will take place on Sunday, 8 July 2012, on the public roads of Paphos. The international event coincides with Cyprus' EU Presidency.  Information can be found in the rules and regulations (PDF) for 2012. More news will follow as soon as we have it. Stay in touch through Facebook and Twitter for the latest.

Once again we raced with the sun! The Cyprus Institute is looking back on a very successful 2011 Solar Car Challenge. Taking the race to the public road made the race a true experience! The solar vehicles started their race at Neapolis University in Paphos, drove to the track in Geroskipou for the main part of the race, and after the finish line, drove to the Paphos Castle for the grand finale.

At Paphos Castle, the fort in the harbour of Paphos, Mr. Antonis Paschalides, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism presented the winners with their awards. The Technical School of Ayiou Lazarou (Larnaca) won the Challenge category. It was their second time competing, but they built a completely new vehicle for this year, and proved to be successful: they beat number two, last year's winner (the Technical School of Avgorou, Famagusta) by two laps. See the full results on the participants page.

All vehicles had a battery fed by solar panels, attached on the car. With the sun as their only fuel, they raced without making a sound, surprising spectators and passers-by with their speed and unusual design. An impression, with photos and videos, of The Cyprus Institute 2011 Solar Car Challenge will be up shortly. Also, don't forget to have a look on the Facebook page.

We would like to thank all participating teams, their teachers, the volunteers, co-organizers and sponsors for all their contributions to a successful Solar Car Challenge. We are already looking forward to next year, when we will once again race with the sun!
