Abstract

The Mediterranean Sea is a unique marine ecosystem, which despite the fact that it is enclosed by land, and receives large amounts of nutrients of crustal and anthropogenic origin, remains an ultra-oligotrophic system. Understanding the factors influencing the productivity of the basin is thus of paramount importance. It is well known that atmospheric deposition, especially in oligotrophic waters, could supply to a marine ecosystem most of the elements (N, P, Fe) necessary to sustain new primary production.

Thus, it is important to examine the composition, seasonality and fate of both atmospheric deposition and settling particulate material in the water column as they could contribute to better understand the external factors affecting the productivity of the basin and consequently fish production. In addition except seawater, atmospheric deposition on land can impact quality of soil and consequently food production. In this talk emphasis will be given in wine.
