A.G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences

The A.G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences, held by Prof. Thilo Rehren and generously funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation, will support activities in the field of Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Prof. Thilo Rehren, a scholar of the highest international reputation and Director of the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute, endeavours to bring STARC’s activities to a new level of excellence, by building on its existing networks and expertise, and by the addition of a wide range of new skills and proficiencies.

The Chair will expand and enrich STARC’s strength in archaeological materials science, including the study of the production and distribution of metals, ceramics and glass, with the overall aim to further establish CyI as the leading centre for research in Cypriot Archaeology within the Eastern Mediterranean and Near Eastern context.

The establishment of the A.G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences will benefit the entire archaeological and historical scholarly community in Cyprus, by offering state-of-the-art scientific expertise, modern laboratory infrastructures, and a thoroughly collaborative approach to facilitate the cross-disciplinary research that is required for advancing today’s knowledge.

The ceremony will be followed by a public lecture at 17:00

Superpowered Archaeology: Archaeological Questions and Scientific Revelations

Professor Marcos Martinón-Torres
George Pitt-Rivers Professor of Archaeological Science, University of Cambridge
