Abstract

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is not an unknown artist, quite the contrary. Each year, he is the subject of solo exhibitions throughout the world, and the greatest museums have some of his works on their walls. There are countless books on him, published in all languages. He regularly makes the headlines for the dizzying prices his artworks can fetch at auction sales or for issues of authenticity that also animate the art market. His works, paintings, sculptures and drawings have much to reveal.

The paintings must, for instance, be considered in their full dimension: the painted front, the sides and the back, where the material history of the painting can be read. By penetrating the matter thanks to scientific analyses, one can then find with accuracy what the eye cannot detect: the artist’s approaches, his gestures, the palette, pentimenti and trials that escape our gaze.
