Abstract

The smallest object in the universe known to have size is the proton: its radius is a million times smaller than that of an atom. Objects that have size, necessarily have shape, which then raises the obvious question about the shape of the proton.
The quest on how to measure the shape of such abysmally small object whose behavior is governed by relativity and quantum mechanics will be presented. Following a search that lasted thirty years and tens of millions of Euros we have a surprising definitive answer.
The underlying physics, the methodology and the fancy instrumentation required to address this fundamental question will be presented in a way that does not require knowledge of relativity or quantum mechanics.
