Abstract

Science has a crucial role in today’s society. Science provides evidence in solving major challenges of our time, not least those expressed in the United Nation's 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals. And science can satisfy our curiosity about the world by examining the conditions for our existence, and seeking to tell us about our origin and about how our world is constituted, from the very smallest constituents to the discovery of new galaxies.

The Academies of Science work actively to promote scientific progress and to disseminate scientific knowledge, to politicians and policy makers as well as to the general public. The European Academies’ Science Advisory Council, EASAC, comprising the Academies of Science within the EU member states, Norway, Switzerland and the UK, synthesise scientific evidence, based on research from around the world, and provide policy advice on urgent matters with impact on our society. For society will only benefit if decisions are based on scientific knowledge.

Science has at all times encountered resistance; ancient times’ superstition has today been replaced by populism, resistance to knowledge and alternative facts – this is worrying for the entire democratic process. The academies, together with the universities, are therefore important pillars for democracy.

The lecture will discuss the role of Academies in today’s society, and the role of the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council in policy decisions.

Science, Technology and Society Lecture Series

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) and the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF), in partnership with The Cyprus Institute (CyI), having the common objective of furthering the public understanding and public appreciation of scientific research, as well as its impact on society, agreed to launch a joint lecture series, which will bring to Cyprus world leaders in a wide range of scientific and research fields.

The public lecture series is aimed not only at the Cypriot research community, but at all interested members of the public, with the aim of sharing cutting-edge scientific advances in an accessible and engaging way, and to connect ground-breaking scientific and technological research with current social and innovation challenges. The Lectures are also intended to stimulate a wider discussion on the future of science, society and technology.
