Overview

The team of Project SUNSTONE (SESAME's Upgrading Network for Scientific User Training and Outreach into the Next Era) is delighted to invite you to participate in the «User Community Building workshop in synchrotron radiation techniques available for Cypriot academic and industrial users at SESAME», a major upcoming two-day event held on 24-25 November 2025 at The Cyprus Institute and additional venues (Nicosia, Cyprus) and organised as part of the Horizon Europe SUNSTONE project by the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), The Cyprus Institute (CyI), and the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus

The main aim of the SUNSTONE project, co-funded by the European Commission and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), is to ensure the sustained consolidation of SESAME, a pivotal synchrotron Research Infrastructure (RI), in the Middle East, serving eight members — Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine, and Türkiye — while extending its focus towards Africa. One of the major aims of the SUNSTONE project is the expansion of the Cypriot user community of academic and industrial users of the SESAME RI. This workshop by SUNSTONE is tailored for Cyprus’s academic and industrial researchers in order to provide them with knowledge, tools, and scientific expertise, as well as support to get easy access to SESAME as the closest synchrotron to Cyprus. It consists of (i) scientific presentations by Cypriot researchers and analytical experts from two nationally funded RIs in Cyprus — SESAME and the BioMERA Platform microCT facility — followed by (ii) networking and mentoring sessions grouped by research topic with the aim to develop “crazy scientific ideas” into proposals for SESAME beamtime requests with SESAME facility and synchrotron user experts.

More details on the SUNSTONE can be found at https://sunstone.sesame.org.jo/ and https://www.sesame.org.jo/
