About the SimEA project Seminar Series

The SimEA project Seminar Series aims at promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge, focusing on Computational Science and Engineering, by featuring prominent researchers from around the world presenting their views and addressing key questions.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 810660.

Abstract

Fun things start to happen when active particles get kinky. This talk will focus on what happens when active particles move from point-like geometries such as spheres, into non-trivial topologies such as tori, and slender 3D curved structures, offering opportunities for rich dynamical behaviours and new control strategies exploiting shape changes and flexibility.

About the Speaker

Dr. Thomas Montenegro-Johnson is Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Biology at the University of Birmingham. He did his PhD at the University of Birmingham with Profs John Blake and David Smith, focusing on modelling microorganism swimming through shear-thinning fluids. Following a further year PDRA position with Dave examining sperm elastohydrodynamics, he joined Eric Lauga's group in Cambridge as a PDRA, and was subsequently awarded a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowship on mathematics of microbots. He returned to Birmingham in August 2016 as a Lecturer, became Deputy Director of Research in late 2018, and became a Senior Lecturer in 2019. His research spans mathematical biology, continuum mechanics, and soft matter, and is currently funded by a H2020 FET Open (H-Reality) and a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award.
