On 2-13 November 2020 the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) of The Cyprus Institute organized jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) an online Training Course on assessing policies for decarbonizing energy systems. The course involved lectures and presentations of quantitative tools to assess the future evolution of energy demand and the cost-effectiveness of demand-oriented policies, to enable the formulation of national climate strategies in line with the goals adopted in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

More specifically, the course involved:

  • Hands-on training on IAEA’s Model for Analysis of Energy Demand, which evaluates future energy demand in a country based on medium- to long-term scenarios of socioeconomic, technological and demographic development.
  • Cost-effectiveness assessments developed by researchers of The Cyprus Institute and the Cyprus University of Technology through the calculation of Marginal Abatement Cost Curves for policies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • National case studies about energy efficiency databases, energy demand models and their application by public authorities.

The course was attended by over 40 participants from public authorities, academic institutions and research institutes in Central and Eastern Europe. The event was held in the frame of IAEA’s project RER2017 on “Assessing the Role of Low Carbon Energy Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation”.
