State-of-the-art Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Installed at STARC

It works

The Cyprus Institute is proud to host the first Zeiss EVO 15 Scanning Electron Microscope in Cyprus with an advanced Oxford Instrument AZtec Energy Dispersive Spectrometer. The SEM has superb imaging capabilities and will be used across wide range of current research. It will primarily underpin the research at the A.G. Leventis Chair for Archaeological Sciences, from plant and animal remains to micro-debris, for pigments, ceramic, metal and glass objects, and much more. The EDS component will offer immediate chemical analysis of these materials, with the ability to analyse separately different aspects of a single object, such as a pigment particle on top of a ceramic object, or indeed individual pigment particles next to each other.

The SEM-EDS system will also be used for environmental research at the Cyprus Institute; once it is full calibrated,  a merit-based process will be established to make the instrument available for researchers at other institutions in Cyprus.
