PhD in Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences (Energy and Climate Policy)

 

We seek a talented and ambitious researcher for projects aiming to develop new and/or expand existing mathematical models for simulations of energy, environmental and climate policies. The successful applicant will be admitted to the PhD programme in Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences. The researcher will be trained to use a range of mathematical modelling techniques and tools, which s/he will then have to utilize to develop scenarios and simulations for the socio-economic or techno-economic assessment of energy and climate policies at national and international level.

The objective of this PhD research project is to improve energy systems modelling and socio-economic impact assessments of energy and climate policies through: (a) expansion of our open-source energy models in order to be applicable to the entire region of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, (b) development of new modules or improvement of existing ones to better represent energy-environment-economy linkages through appropriate macro- or micro-economic modelling, (c) addition of modules related to life cycle analysis and circular economy considerations in existing energy-economic optimization tools. The work will be carried out at the Energy Planning and Analysis Research Group of The Cyprus institute.

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a new (established in 2005) and rapidly growing non-profit research and educational institution with scientific and technological focus. It is supported by the Government of Cyprus, which views its establishment as important to its overall policy of transforming Cyprus into a regional centre for research and education. The Graduate School was established in 2010 and is the educational arm of The Cyprus Institute. It is a fully accredited, degree-granting institution of higher education offering exclusively postgraduate programs. It maintains a small number of students that are fully integrated into the research activities of the institute. This provides the students with the opportunity to acquire hands-on training in the use of the latest methods and techniques, have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and conduct research with internationally recognized research teams.

The Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWRC) was the first Research Centre of CyI. It comprises the Energy Division and the Water division. The Energy Division has attracted external funding of over €6m since 2010 from various national and European sources. The Division works in the areas of: Energy production from renewable energy sources and associated issues of energy storage and desalination; Energy planning, technoeconomic studies and policy issues; and Sustainability in the Built Environment with emphasis on energy efficiency.

 

 

The successful candidate must be a University graduate (MSc level) with a relevant academic degree (i.e. in engineering, natural sciences, or economics). Very good oral and written communication skills in English, knowledge of mathematical, statistical and/or econometric modelling methods and tools, very good study results, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary and international teams are a must.
