Delegation from the Treasury of the Republic, Headed by the Accountant General, Ms Rea Georgiou, Visits CyI

The Accountant General of the Republic, Ms Rea Georgiou, heading a delegation from her office that included Deputy Accountant General, Mr. Andreas Zachariades, and section heads Andreas Sophocleous, Andreas Antoniades, Marios Hadjidamianou, Demetris Mavromatis, Maria Motiti, and Nicolina Mina, visited CyI on Wednesday, 17 January. Following a briefing on the Institute’s activities by Assoc. Vice President for Operations Dr. M. Yiangou, and a briefing on the activities of the Treasury of the Republic’s by Ms R. Georgiou, the delegation was given a tour of the laboratories and other CyI research infrastructures by CyI Vice-President for Research, Professor E. Stephanou.

Present during the visit were Board of Trustees members Sotos Zachaios, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, and Kyriacos Kokkinos, as well as the Vice-President of the Friends of CyI Association, Ms. Soula Kythreotou Zavou. In his welcoming address, CyI President Prof. Costas Papanicolas, noted the long and excellent collaboration between The Cyprus Institute and the Treasury of the Republic, and personally thanked Ms Georgiou and her office for their professionalism and their unbiased, impartial evaluation of the Institute’s activities, included in the assessment report submitted to the Parliament. “It is our hope that this excellent collaboration will not only continue, but will be strengthened and expanded even further in the future’, he added.

In her remarks, the Accountant General noted that “back in 2012, when we were first asked to carry out an assessment of the Institute, I was positively impressed with what I found about the Institute and its activities, and it is my pleasure to be visiting The Cyprus Institute once again to get an update on its continuing progress and successes”.

“The keen interest shown by Treasury staff to join me for participating in today’s visit is a testament to the appreciation we have for the Institute”.

“I want to congratulate the Board of Trustees, the administration, and the scientists of The Cyprus Institute for their research achievements and impressive infrastructures, which only confirm the correctness of the decision of the Government to continue its support for The Cyprus Institute ", she added.

It was agreed on both sides to continue the productive dialogue and excellent cooperative spirit that marks the relationship between CyI and the Treasury. It was also agreed to explore possible collaborative projects in the area of data analytics and the management of big data and e-governance.
