Dr. George Pamborides and Prof. Jeffrey Sachs to Join Board of Trustees of The Cyprus Institute

In view of the annual meeting (Feb 21-22, 2019) of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF), Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University and Director the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and Dr. George Pamborides, Prominent Lawyer and Former Minister of Health of Cyprus, have been invited, and accepted, to join the CREF Board.

The Board of Trustees of CREF constitutes the governing body of The Cyprus Institute and as such, it holds the duty to govern CyI, to oversee the stewardship of CyI for its well-being and stability, and to ensure that CyI adheres to the purposes for which it was established and that its vision and mission are being effectively implemented.

The Board of Trustees of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF) is international in its membership and includes distinguished leaders in science, industry, policy, education and public service; it is currently chaired by Prof Dan-Olof Riska, Treasurer of the Finnish Society of Science and Letters.

Dr. George Pamboridis holds a law degree from the University of Athens and a Master’s degree (LL.M.) in Shipping law from the University of Southampton. He also received an M.Sc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D in Public International and Shipping law from the University of Southampton. Dr. Pamboridis is qualified in Cyprus (Member of the Cyprus Bar Association), Greece (Member of the Athens Bar Association) and England & Wales (Roll of Solicitors). Dr. Pamboridis is a corporate lawyer dealing mostly with matters related to Mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, international tax planning, but also Energy law. His extensive shipping background ranks him as one of the leading lawyers in matters of International Shipping regulation. He has also taught International Shipping Law and Energy Law at the University of Cyprus. He was appointed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus on in July 2015 as the Minister of Health, a position he held until the completion of his term in February 2018.  He is currently the Senior Partner of Pamboridis LLC.  He is the author of the book International Shipping Law: Legislation and Enforcement published by Kluwer Law International, the book Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Cyprus released in September 2012, and of numerous legal articles.

Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs is a world-renowned professor of economics, leader in sustainable development and senior UN advisor. He is University Professor at Columbia University, where he serves as Director of the Center for Sustainable Development. Prior to joining Columbia, Sachs spent over twenty years as a professor at Harvard University, most recently as the Galen L. Stone Professor of International Trade. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Sachs received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard.  He is Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, a commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission for Development, and an SDG Advocate for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. He also served as the Director of the Earth Institute from 2002 to 2016.
 
Prof. Sachs is the co-recipient of the 2015 Blue Planet Prize, the leading global prize for environmental leadership, and many other international awards and honors. He is a bestselling author, and syndicated columnist whose monthly newspaper columns appear in more than 100 countries. He has twice been named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential world leaders. He was called by the New York Times, “probably the most important economist in the world,” and by Time Magazine “the world’s best known economist.” A recent survey by The Economist Magazine ranked Professor Sachs among the world’s three most influential living economists of the past decade.
