The President of the Republic of Cyprus honours CyI’s Institute Professor Jos Lelieveld

President Anastasiades hounous CyI's Climate GroupΤhe Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation together with the Planning Bureau organised a meeting on Friday, 18th October 2013, between the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Research Council (ERC) Grantees based in Cyprus, as recognition of their achievement to secure funding from the ERC.

The President honoured Prof. Jos Lelieveld, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and CyI Institute Professor, together with seven other scientists from Cypriot Academia, with a commemorative plaquete for his contribution for the advancement of scientific research in the Republic of Cyprus. The Cyprus Institute was represented by CyI’s Acting Vice President of Research and EEWRC Director, Prof. Manfred Lange and Dr. Panos Hadjinicolaou member of Prof. Lelieveld's Atmospheric and Climate Modelling Group.

During the ceremony the President stated that “the honourees managed to stand apart and distinguish themselves for their scientific excellence, in the most competitive European programme, in the research sector, in which the best minds of the most advanced technological countries in Europe participate.”

The “Consistent computation of the chemistry-cloud continuum and climate change in Cyprus (C8)” project studies the past, present and future of the air pollution and climate change in Cyprus and the region, using innovative methodologies and it is funded by the European Research Council.

Specifically, the research carried out at CyI, deals with important aspects of atmospheric chemistry and aerosols and their complex interactions with the hydrological cycle in the hot and dry climate of the Eastern Mediterranean, a region which is considered a hot-spot of climate change and air pollution.

These issues are studied in conjunction with the use of atmospheric and climate modeling and analysis of terrestrial and satellite measurements of chemical and meteorological parameters.

The research is carried out at The Cyprus Institute, by a group led by Prof. Lelieveld, composed of Cypriot and International scientists with expertise in the Atmospheric and Climate Sciences.

Prof. Lelieveld received a PhD from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Utrecht University (1990). His thesis subject was "The role of clouds in tropospheric chemistry" (supervisor Prof. Paul Crutzen). He worked at Stockholm University (1991) and the University of California, San Diego (1992), and became a Professor at Wageningen University in 1993 and at Utrecht University in 1995. In 2000 he was appointed as a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz. Since January 2008 he is a Professor at the Cyprus Institute and leads the Atmospheric and Climate Modeling group of the EEWRC. In July 2010, the Board of the Institute bestowed the title of 'Institute Professor'. According to the ISI Web of Knowledge he is "highly cited" based on about 265 publications.
