CyI and the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization to Cooperate in Areas of Mutual Interest
On Wednesday 30th of October 2019, CyI and the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (CAPO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), agreeing to reinforce their collaboration on issues and projects of common interest related to data storage and analysis using high-performance computational infrastructures, as well as applications for unmanned aerial vehicles. CyI’s Cy-Tera supercomputer is the largest open access supercomputer in the Eastern Mediterranean, offering unique data processing, storage and visualization capabilities, as well as analytical capabilities employing artificial intelligence.
The MoU signing ceremony took place at The Cyprus Institute’s facilities in Athalassa. Signing the MoU on behalf of the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization, was the Commissioner of CAPO and the Former Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Timmy Efthymiou, and on behalf of The Cyprus Institute, its President Prof. Costas Papanicolas.
In his address, Prof. Papanicolas noted that signing the agreement with CAPO is very important, because it is yet another opportunity for CyI to contribute to Cypriot society. Moreover, as he noted, one of CyI's aims is to assist in adopting cutting-edge technology to the service of a modern knowledge-based economy, both in Cyprus and in the wider Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Efthymiou noted that The Cyprus Institute can contribute significantly in the field of Agriculture. The signing of this agreement is only the beginning of a long-term cooperation between the two organizations in the field of data and technology.
Both organisations will benefit from this cooperation since they have complementary data and infrastructure needs. Additionally, CAPO will provide the availability of simulation results for utilization by CyI researchers for their research activities. Finally, Cyl and the CAPO will promote active collaboration and pursue joint research activities in areas of common interest.
