The Cyprus Institute participates in the 1^st Mediterranean Science Festival

The Cyprus Institute participated in the 1st Mediterranean Science Festival, organized by the Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) and Science Communication Cyprus (Sci Co), at the Carob Mill, Limassol on 3-6 December 2015. This unique event brings science closer to the broad public, in a fun and innovative way. Children, students, adults, young professionals and teachers had the opportunity to enjoy science through various activities, lectures and interactive presentations.

The Cyprus Institute participated this year with two activities:

Water and Land in Motion

Researchers from the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center of The Cyprus Institute demonstrated the effect of different land management practices on water flows and erosion with their iconic scale model.

Visitors were given the opportunity to turn on the rain and experience how human decisions can reduce flooding and soil loss. This model was accompanied by audio-visual material of climate hazards and climate-resilient water management practices.

STARLAB a Mobile Archaeological Laboratory

The aim of the activity was to demonstrate the work of STAR-LAB project, concerning the creation of CyI’s advanced mobile laboratory with instrumentation suitable for the archaeological fieldwork and analysis of remains, monuments and artifacts. Its state–of–the–art instruments, equipment and the related software to support activity in 3D data capture and analysis, gave the public the possibility to get engaged with the whole procedure from data capturing to digital processing and creation of 3D reality based objects.
At the same time, interactive applications of 3D models were displayed (virtual reality).

The event involved researchers and scientists from many academic and research institutions, as well as professionals from private science initiatives and innovative businesses.
