Dr Maria Christou holds a PhD from the Department of Zoology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a Master’s in Ecology and Environmental Management from the University of York, and a Bachelor’s in Biology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has also gained a certificate in GIS in Geoscience from the National and Technical University of Athens; she has participated in a series of seminars provided by ESA (European Space Agency) on remote sensing and she earned a Micro-credential on GIS and remote sensing in a Changing world, offered by the University of Western Australia. She has also completed a MOOC Medical Entomology by the Institut Pasteur and she is a qualified first aider.
Currently, she is developing models and risk maps for public health assessments, focusing on insects of medical importance, under the One Health approach. Prior to joining the Cyprus Institute, she has worked in an environmental consultancy in Cyprus and in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters in Athens, where she obtained extensive experience in data analysis, stakeholder communication, fieldwork, scientific report writing, and project management. She is an author of 7 publications and a book chapter.
She finds fascinating the study of aquatic ecosystems-human interactions under climate change and in the future, she would like to contribute to developing early warning systems for invasive alien species.
