QWERTY - Quark-level Weak-interaction Effects Revealed Through Hyperons

rif logo     rep cyprus logo

Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) has reached a precision era, enabling first-principles calculations of hadronic observables with increasingly controlled uncertainties. However, several important effects relevant for precision studies of weak interactions remain challenging to quantify, including isospin-breaking and electromagnetic corrections, as well as processes involving multi-hadron final states.

This project will support the development of a research programme to be submitted as an ERC application, aimed at extending lattice QCD towards these frontiers through targeted exploratory studies. In particular, it will investigate isospin-breaking effects in baryon observables by computing electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking contributions to baryon mass splittings and by exploring corrections to the ratio of semileptonic decay rates of positively and negatively charged Sigma hyperons into a neutral Lambda hyperon. These studies will provide essential methodological validation and quantitative evidence for the feasibility of high-precision calculations of weak baryon processes.
