ΦBSM - Searches of Physics Beyond the Standard Model

The phBSM project aims to advance our understanding of fundamental physics by performing high-precision calculations using lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) to explore phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM). While the SM has been remarkably successful in describing particle interactions, it leaves many critical questions unanswered, such as the nature of dark matter, the origin of neutrino masses, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. phBSM targets two high-impact areas in hadronic physics: (i) computing nucleon charges and form factors relevant for interpreting parity-violating experiments and dark matter searches, and (ii) achieving a precise lattice determination of the CKM matrix element |Vus| through studies of semileptonic decays of hyperons, enabling stringent SM consistency checks.

Utilizing simulations at physical quark masses generated by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC), this project capitalizes on state-of-the-art numerical techniques and high-performance computing platforms to produce results with sub-percent precision. Innovations include algorithmic advancements for Exascale computing, exploitation of SU(3) symmetry-breaking effects, and the first comprehensive lattice QCD study of hyperon structure. phBSM not only supports frontier experimental programs (e.g., LHCb, JLab, BESIII) but also strengthens the role of Cypriot institutions in international collaborations, bolsters local research capacity in data-intensive computational science, and aligns with the strategic objectives of the EU and Cyprus in the area of advanced scientific computing.
