Abstract

Inverse problems comprise a very extensive class of problems in science and engineering. Well-known examples include: scattering problems in nuclear and particle physics, tomographic imaging in medical science, identification of oil and natural gas deposits in geosciences. The availability of computing and subsequently of high-performance computing enabled tremendous progress in the field of Inverse Problems.

We developed a novel and powerful approach to solving this class of problems which is very demanding in computational resources and data handling. The method is based on the “Athens Model Independent Analysis Scheme - AMIAS*”. Recent advances in AI and Data Science hold the promise to further the potential and applicability of this method. The method and its applications in nuclear and particle physics and medical imaging will be presented. Further evolution of the method, taking advantage of the advances in AI and data science will be discussed.

 

About the Speaker

Costas N. PapanicolasProf. Costas N. Papanicolas is the CEO of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF) and Institute Professor and the former (founding) President of the Cyprus Institute. He holds B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has served at CEA (Saclay, France) and on the faculty of the University of Illinois of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Athens.  He directed the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications of Greece and the Physics Laboratory of the University of Athens.  He chaired the Accreditation Council for Tertiary Education of the Republic of Cyprus (1998 -2006), and served the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology of the Hellenic Republic and the Science and innovation Council of the Republic of Cyprus.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, member of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europea), member of the Silk Road Academy of Sciences (China) and Founding member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and the Arts. He was been awarded the “Medal of Excellence for Service to the Republic” by the Republic of Cyprus for his contributions to research and education to the Republic of Cyprus, “H.M. Gago Award in European Science Policy” of Portugal and ordained as “Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia” by the President of Italy. 

 


 

 
About the EuroCC-2 project

EuroCC 2 will work to identify and address the skills gaps in the European High Performance Computing (HPC) ecosystem and coordinate cooperation across Europe to ensure a consistent skills base.

The role of EuroCC 2 is to establish and run a network of more than 30 NCCs across the EuroHPC Participating States. The NCCs act as single points of access in each country between stakeholders and national and EuroHPC systems. They operate on a regional and national level to liaise with local communities, in particular SMEs, map HPC competencies and facilitate access to European HPC resources for users from the private and public sector.

EuroCC 2 delivers training, interacts with industry, develops competence mapping and communication materials and activities, and supports the adoption of HPC services in other related fields, such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), high performance data analytics (HPDA) to expand the HPC user base.
