Abstract
Penetration of renewable energy to decarbonize power and industry is hampered by its intermittent nature, perceived risk and need for
storage. Finding synergies and opportunistic integration with existing energy systems and processes can help in charting a smoother transition to a decarbonized future. In this talk, selected examples of research and development of plausible and cost-effective synergetic solutions will be presented, with focus on concentrated solar thermal energy, alternative fuels and waste valorisation.
About the Speaker
Bassam Dally is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Clean Combustion Research Centre at KAUST. Over the 32 years, Prof Dally has contributed seminal work on a variety of research topics related to energy conversion and storage, sustainability and decarbonization. He has expertise in solar thermal, combustion, alternative fuels, ocean power, and hybrids.
Lately, his work is particularly focused on the development of new technologies to decarbonize industrial processes, waste to value (plastic recycling), energy systems and fuel pyrolysis. His highly cited research output was disseminated in leading journals, local and international conferences, and industry reports. He has also given many invited talks and participated in a variety of forums and panels on issues related to energy, circularity, hydrogen, and industry decarbonization.
He won many awards over the years, including "Energy Professional of the Year in South Australia", and a Fellowship of the Combustion Institute.
