Colloquium: Towards Solving Open Problems in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics: the Tensor Network Approach

Abstract

After an introduction to the standard model of particle interaction we will review the status of lattice QCD calculations providing examples of the hadron spectrum and the inner structure of nucleons. We will then point to problems that cannot be solved by conventional Monte Carlo simulation techniques, i.e. non-zero baryon density, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and real time simulations.
It will be demonstrated at the example of the 1+1 dimensional Schwinger model that tensor network techniques are able to overcome these problems showing that with this approach - and eventual quantum simulations-- opens a new path for solving QCD.

About The Speaker

Karl JansenDr Karl Jansen is a member of the DESY Theory group in Zeuthen, Germany.

He has received the 2011 Ken Wilson Lattice Award, the 'Experienced Researcher' award from the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation in 2012 / 2013 and the NIC award for excellence project computing.  His research interests are Lattice Field theory, turbulence, theoretical biology and quantum computing.

He is the author of a total of 387 scientific publications which have been cited 11,072 times (as of October 2018 and according to the Spires data base http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/hep/). 185 of these publications have appeared in in peer reviewed international journals, 202 are contributions to proceedings of international conferences and schools including a number of invited plenary talks.
