The COST Action Project

The EU Cost Action CA18110 - "Underground Built Heritage as catalyzer for Community Valorization" – established and implemented an expert network, aiming at promoting balanced and sustainable approaches for the conservation of the underground heritage and, at the same time, realizing the potential of underground space in urban and rural areas for regeneration policies.

It disseminates knowledge on underground culture and assists local communities' decision-making with adequate cultural, scientific and technical knowledge of the underground built environment from many different aspects (i.e. archaeology, geotechnics, history, urban planning, cultural anthropology, economics, architecture, cultural tourism).

Action CA18110 is composed by a network of experts from more than 20 countries whose main objective is to promote sustainable approaches for the conservation of the underground heritage and to develop the potential of the underground space in the social, economic and cultural field.

Abstract

The Cyprus Institute – STARC/APAC Labs is the COST Action local partner. CyI's work will focus on the Ayia Napa Monastery and cave church as a case study to promote and valorize the UBH site through the Living-Labs approach, focusing on the local community and stakeholders’ involvement.

The project aims to encourage a participatory approach to the site and Cultural Heritage of the area and to develop sustainable and resilient models to foster and renew the local economy starting from the natural and cultural heritage.

The webinar will present the overall project through the contribution of the COST Action Chair and the STSM visiting expert, members of STARC-APAC team. A second part will be devoted to the description of Ayia Napa Monastery and its landscape through the voice of HE the Bishop of Constantia and Ammochostos, the Director of the Department of Antiquities, the Mayor of Ayia Napa and the leader of the Ayia Napa musealization team.
