Abstract

Technological evolution offered by Moore's law does not progress anymore as it did before.  More and more the high-energy consumption inhibits further progress. New approaches that are more energy efficient and have the potential to solve complex tasks are therefore in demand. The human brain, though, is an example showing that nature can offer much more computational power with much less energy consumption. In this talk I will give an overview of the field of brain-inspired computing and then review our most recent research in the field of opto-electronic memristors for neuromorphic computing applications.

About the Speaker

Dr Alexandros EmborasDr. Alexandros Emboras

Dr. Alexandros Emboras is currently lecturer (tenured position) in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (Integrated Systems Laboratory) at the ETH Zürich. Since January 2018 he is been coordinating the center of single atom electronics and photonics at ETH Zurich (http://single-atom.ethz.ch).
Alexandros holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, CEA-LETI Grenoble (2012). After his PhD, he worked at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel as a Postdoctoral Scholar (2013). As a postdoc he pioneered the field of integrated optical memristors in Prof. Uriel Levy’s group. From 2014-2018, as a research scientist, he led the atomic-scale research activities at the Institute of Electromagnetic Field (IEF) of Prof. Jürg Leuthold (ETH Zurich).
