CyI President Prof. Costas Papanicolas Elected as Founding Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts

On April 10, 2019, Prof. Euphrosyne Rizopoulou-Egoumenidou and Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas were elected as founding members of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.

The Academy, which was launched by President Anastasiades on January 15, 2018 aims at recognising the scientific and cultural achievements of the country’s scientists as well as promoting and encouraging the growth of sciences, arts, research and development.

“With the creation of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, we are succeeding in making use of the most prominent intellectuals of our country to promote excellence in all manifestations of sciences, letters and of the arts,” Anastasiades said.

Its objectives include the international promotion of the work of Cypriot scientists, the promotion of excellence, facilitating cooperation between Cyprus’ leading thinkers, supporting education, giving the state scientific advice and strengthening cooperation between local industry, universities and research centres.

The academy will also promote the development of research and innovation in Cyprus, the representation of Cyprus in international scientific forums, the publication of a scientific journal and the publication of announcements and research.

The founding committee of the academy comprises of Nobel Prize Winner, Prof Christophoros Pissarides (Economics), Prof Loucas Christophorou (Physics), Prof Kyriacos Nicolaou (Chemistry), and Prof Vassos Karageorghis (Archaeology).

The elected 12 founding members of the Academy are the following:

Sciences: Costas N. Papanicolas, Soteris Kalogirou, Leontios Kostrikis, Marios Polykarpou.

Letters and Arts: Euphrosyne Rizopoulou-Egoumenidou, Demetrios Michaelides, Eleni Mouzala, Kyriakos Charalambides.

Ethics, Social and Political Sciences: Achilles Emilianides, Andreas Demetriou, Stavros Zenios, Stavros Fotiou.
