STARC Assistant Professor Efthymia Nikita Receives the Dan David Prize at a Ceremony at Tel Aviv University

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, STARC Assistant Professor Efthymia Nikita was among the nine scholars who received a Dan David Prize in the award ceremony held at Tel Aviv University. The Dan David Prize awards up to 9 prizes of $300,000 each year to outstanding early and mid-career scholars and practitioners in the historical disciplines. The Prize is given in recognition of the winners’ contribution to the study of the past and to support their future endeavors. It is currently the largest history prize in the world. Dr Nikita was selected among 400 nominees and was actually the only archaeologist among the nine winners.

The meeting in Tel Aviv was not only a chance to celebrate the winners’ achievements, but also an opportunity to have insightful discussions about the historical disciplines and curatorial practice. In this context, “History Day”, a one-day event exploring the work of the winners, was organized on Tuesday, May 10, in the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History at Tel Aviv University. “History Day” consisted of four panels and conversations on themes that highlighted different overlapping threads and concepts that characterize the prize winners’ work. The event was attended by an audience of faculty and students as well as members of the general public. In addition, the panels were recorded and will be shared online through the BBC History Extra website in June.
