Visit by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cyprus, Mrs. Elke Merks-Schaapveld, to CyI

On Thursday, 31st of March 2022, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nicosia, H.E. Mrs. Elke Merks-Schaapveld, accompanied by Ms. Kristina Alexandrou, Ambassador’s intern guest, visited The Cyprus Institute's premises in Aglantzia (Nicosia) and Pentakomo (Limassol).

Hosting the meeting in Nicosia was EEWRC Director, Prof. Fadi G. Comair, in the presence of CyI Assistant Vice President for Institute Affairs, Dr Nicolas Jarraud, Head of PROTEAS Operations Facility, Dr Marios C. Georgiou, CyI Associate Professor of Hydrology and Water Management, Dr Adriana Bruggeman, Dr Tariq Judeh from the University of Lille, EEWRC Research Assistant, Dr Danielle El Hajj, and Ms Sophia Aristides.

Following a brief presentation on the Institute’s numerous scientific and educational activities, and cooperation efforts between The Cyprus Institute and Dutch research institutions, by Dr Jarraud, both parts discussed opportunities for further collaboration, especially in the fields of innovation and Sustainable Development.

During the meeting, Prof. Comair and Assoc. Prof. Bruggeman presented the overview of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC), as well as Prof. Comair focused on the Hydro-diplomacy Partnership Program, and the UNESCO – IHP EcoMed Academy Project.

During the visit, the Ambassador was given a guided tour of CyI campus and Institute’s laboratories, including Graduate School, Linear Fresnel Facility, Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), Environmental Archaeology Lab and Andreas Pittas Art Characterization (APAC) Laboratories, and PROTEAS Solar Research Facility in Pentakomo.

Finally, the Ambassador expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to visit, and congratulated the Administration and the Scientists of the Institute for the impressive facilities and their research achievements.
