Visit by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Makis Keravnos

On Thursday, December 14, 2023, Minister of Finance, Mr. Makis Keravnos visited The Cyprus Institute’s premises in Athalassa, accompanied by Ministry officials, Mr. Alexis Koutselinis and Mrs. Maria Michael.

Hosting the meeting was CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas, in the presence of CyI Vice-President of Operations, Dr Michalis Yiangou, CyI Asst. Vice President of Policy and Internal Communications, Mrs. Eleni Sophocleous, CyI Asst. Vice President for Strategy and Development, Dr Konstantinos Kleovoulou, CyI Director of Research and Technical Support, Dr Vassilis Tsakalos, and CyI Head of Graduate School, Dr Chrysanthia Leontiou. The meeting was also attended by the Member of the Board of Trustees, Mrs. Androula Vassiliou.

During the visit, Mr. Keravnos affirmed the Ministry's commitment to close collaboration with The Cyprus Institute. He received a comprehensive briefing on the institute’s mission, multidisciplinary work in research and innovation, and its recent achievements.

Highlighting the pivotal role of research in technology development and its integration into the economy and citizens' daily lives, Mr. Keravnos emphasized its relevance in the context of the European Union's goals for a green and digital economy. He also disclosed that during former President Papadopoulos's governance, he, as then Minister of Finance, proposed the establishment of The Cyprus Institute to the Cabinet.

CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas, noted that the Institute’s 15 years of pioneering work have been marked by measurable goals and results, and underscored the Institute’s role in supporting the Government, especially the Ministry of Finance, in formulating a plan for the green transition. “Investing in research, not only contributes to external relations and a sustainable economy, but also enhances societal confidence and elevates Cyprus’ visibility”, he highlighted.

The Minister of Finance’s visit is part of The Cyprus Institute's initiative to inform government officials and political leaders about its role and significant contributions to Cyprus’ society.
