Winter School Description

The Winter School revolves around the polygenerative research facility PROTEAS and consists of theoretical lectures and hands-on training on hybridized solar concentration technologies, thermal energy storage and desalination technologies, including a tour and on-site training at PROTEAS, as well as software tutorials.

The PROTEAS state-of-the-art facility has been primarily designed to cogenerate electricity and desalinated water. Over the time, the facility has been upgraded with a micro-grid to supply the electricity needs of the auxiliaries and produce extra electricity to the grid. The facility encloses a wind turbine, two dish-Stirling units, solar PV collectors, batteries and thermal storage. The Rankine cycle associates a steam turbine and a Multi-Effect Distillation Unit to produce both electricity and desalinated water. The facility also hosts a Forward Osmosis unit.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Calculate the levelised cost of energy of a facility
  • Evaluate the optical performance of a solar concentration facility
  • Calculate the performance of thermal energy storage solutions
  • Familiarize with desalination process and its performance

 

Course Prerequisites

  • Background in applied mathematics to physics (optics, heat-transfer or economics) is necessary
  • Background in thermodynamics is a plus
