Science for Peace : The Cyprus Institute Hosts and Facilitates Meeting of Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian Scientific Program

On 18th September, The Cyprus Institute once more acted as a facilitator in promoting science as a tool for peace in the Eastern Mediterranean, by hosting Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian delegates, including the Rector of Ben Gurion University, the President of the Jordanian Red Crescent, and the Chief Scientist of the Israeli Ministry of Health. The delegates visited The Cyprus Institute to hold the final meeting of the Regional Capacity Building for Disaster Management programme (RegDis).

The RegDis programme, funded by the European Union Peacebuilding Initiative, aims to develop capacity and resilience of rural communities in the area to cope with disasters, including cross-border collaboration in emergency response. In the words of Prof. HaCohen, the Rector of Ben Gurion University, “We were happy to meet our Jordanian and Palestinian colleagues in Cyprus. The collaboration between these parties is vital in view of earthquakes predicted in our region. Hopefully, this collaboration will be the first of many.”

Professor Costas Papanicolas, President of The Cyprus Institute, which hosted the event, stated, “we are glad to host such regional peace-building efforts, which are very much in line with the vision of The Cyprus Institute, which aspires to advance peace and prosperity for Cyprus and the region through scientific and technical cooperation”.
