Dr Grigoria Ioannou is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), The Cyprus Institute. She holds a BA in Archaeology from the University of Cyprus, an MSc in Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology from the University of Sheffield, and a PhD in Science and Technology in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage from The Cyprus Institute. Her doctoral research explored health, demography, living conditions, and urbanism in Hellenistic and Roman Cyprus by integrating archaeological, historical, and bioarchaeological data.
Her research interests focus on the application of biocultural and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of human remains, with particular emphasis on health, demography, diet, and living conditions in ancient Cyprus.
Dr Ioannou has participated in several bioarchaeological research projects in Cyprus and has worked as an archaeologist and bioarchaeologist for the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus. She has collaborated with major local and international research missions, participated in several workshops and training programmes, and undertaken advanced training at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) as a LAAMP Awardee, gaining expertise in synchrotron-based bioarchaeology, XRF/XAFS, micro-CT, and electron microscopy. She has also presented her work at numerous international conferences in the fields of archaeology, bioarchaeology, and archaeological science.
She served as PI of the project “Landscape and Human Interaction: Exploration and Identification of Metals in Human Remains from Ancient Cyprus”, funded by Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), Jordan. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator of the project “Tracing Health Implications in Iron Age Mediterranean: Life and Death in Cypriot Polities” (THIMIAMA), funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation, Cyprus (Grand Agreement POST-DOC/0925 - ROandOther/0019).
