Dr Marco Neira is an internationally recognised medical entomologist and climate-health scientist with more than two decades of experience across three continents. He is an associate research scientist at The Cyprus Institute in Nicosia, where he leads research on the effects of climate change on One Health, as well as the biology, surveillance, and control of disease vectors. Additionally, he contributes to the scientific coordination of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative and leads its Task Force on Health.
Previously, Dr Neira was a full professor and principal investigator at the Center for Research on Health in Latin America (CISEAL, by its Spanish acronym), part of Ecuador’s Pontificia Universidad Católica. He also worked as a senior scientist in the United Kingdom’s biotechnology sector, contributing to landmark research on the genetic control of medically important vector species.
Dr Neira is an elected member of the Ecuadorian Academy of Sciences and a former member of the Executive Council of the American Committee of Medical Entomology. He is a co-inventor on a US patent for an innovative mosquito-control technology, and has authored numerous scientific articles, books, and book chapters, which had received more than 3,000 citations as of 1 July 2026.
