Dry stone wall terraces are a valuable feature of Cypriot cultural heritage and an integral part of the island’s rural landscape. This traditional infrastructure is based on indigenous knowledge that can be traced back to centuries ago. At the same time terraces are adapted to the environment as they are made of local raw material. In addition, dry stone wall terraces are a long-held tradition of mountainous communities, playing a vital role in mitigating soil erosion and therefore the preservation of the communities themselves. However, this know-how is slowly disappearing due to the abandonment of mountainous agriculture, as well as, lack of maintenance and awareness of the importance of this cultural treasure.
With the initiative of local authorities from the Pitsilia area and the Cyprus Institute, we continue the series of workshops initiated three year ago, with the aim to spread this indigenous knowledge and to restore terraces that are in danger of collapsing. At these workshops, dry-stone wall experts will explain the best practices for maintaining terraces, followed by a hands-on session where participants can assist in restoring existing terraces. This will the final workshop organised in the framework of RECARE project.

The 7th workshop will take place on Saturday, 20th October 2018 at Platanistasa.
