The Paris Agreement sets a target for holding the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, preferably below 1.5°C. To achieve this target, the Agreement calls on all countries to prepare increasingly ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
As the major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the energy sector is central to these efforts. Recognising this importance and in line with the NDCs, the EU requires its Member States to develop Integrated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) from 2021 to 2030. Energy Community Member States are also recommended to follow this approach.

The IAEA's project RER2018 “Analyzing Low Carbon Pathways towards an Ambitious Decarbonized Energy Sector by 2050” was designed to support the development of energy strategies for climate change mitigation in line with the Paris Agreement, including country plans for the implementation of NDCs and NECPs. In this frame, the Cyprus meeting on 10-12 October provides an opportunity for experts involved in the development of integrated energy and climate plans to exchange their knowledge and learn from each other’s experience.

The invited participants will present on their related work, both in presentations and during discussion sessions.
Professionals and academics from governmental authorities of seventeen countries (Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, Slovenia and Tajikistan) will participate in this meeting.

This event is by invitation only.
