Abstract 
The most recent advances in the Nuclear Imaging technology that have helped to improve the clinical image quality will be presented. Emphasis is given on new trends and research ideas established in emission modalities on Single Photon (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) mainly at the pre-clinical level. High definition breast tomosynthesis in 3D mammography using dedicated devices with wide-angle capabilities or the systematic approach followed by a number of researchers worldwide to push the limits of the Time-of-Flight PET imaging below the 100 ps level, are typical examples of innovation in action.

Newly developed scintillation materials with advantageous luminosity and timing properties have also helped to develop new types of detector systems. Advanced methodology focuses on optimized readout techniques and algorithmic approaches for the best image reconstruction. Stochastic processes are mixed with traditional iterative reconstructions techniques and they are compared with methods using Artificial Neural Networking in the tomosynthesis process.

About the Speaker
Efstathios Stiliaris is Associate Professor at the Physics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Cyprus Institute. His research interests are focused on the experimental Nuclear Physics and Applications, including instrumentation and development of optimization techniques for high sensitivity and resolution tomo-scintigraphic imaging devices.
He holds a PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics from the Hahn-Meitner Institute and the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany. He is currently acting head of the Nuclear Laboratory and the SPECT-Lab at NKUA. In the recent years works closely within the Solar Energy and Desalination Group of the Cyprus Institute at PROTEAS.
