On the 21 June 2026, The Cyprus Institute and the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) signed in Cairo a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for bilateral collaboration, and the Declaration of the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change.

The Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change is being established under the framework of the Climate Change Initiative for the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME-CCI), an initiative of the of the Government of Cyprus, coordinated by the Cyprus Institute, aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and neighbouring regions by bringing together scientific evidence, policy dialogue, and institutional cooperation. The Initiative has already made a significant regional impact by bringing together scientific evidence, policy dialogue, and institutional cooperation. Along these lines, the Regional Scientific Alliance aims to foster a structured platform for scientific cooperation, policy engagement, and capacity building to address the region’s specific climate challenges.

The scientific discoveries and research leadership of The Cyprus Institute in the field of climate change have added substantial value and new momentum to efforts aimed at strengthening regional collaboration and addressing common environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The signing of both the MoU and the Declaration marks a significant step in strengthening cooperation between The Cyprus Institute and CEDARE. By combining their scientific expertise, regional networks, and institutional capacities, the two organisations will be better positioned to support evidence-based policymaking, advance collaborative research, and develop practical solutions to climate-related challenges. This enhanced partnership is expected to contribute to more coordinated regional action, strengthening resilience and promoting sustainable development across the region.
