The course provides an in depth overview of topics in atmospheric chemistry and physics with particular emphasis on global and regional environmental changes of their impacts on human health and climate and possible mitigation strategies. The objective of the course is to convey a basic but current knowledge in atmospheric physical chemistry, along with an appreciation for the process of research that led to this knowledge. The second objective is to show how one can apply simple principles of physics and chemistry to describe a complex system such as the atmosphere, and how one can reduce the complex system to build models.
The course will also provide opportunities for the students to be actively engaged through presentations and reviews of literature provided throughout the course. Finally, EAS 503 is intended to provide insights into ongoing research activities at The Cyprus Institute with a particular focus on (but not limited to) that of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center.
