The Erasmus Programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme established in 1987. Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, is the new 14.7 billion euro catch-all framework program for education, training, youth and sport, which started in January 2014 and is set to last until 2020. There are currently more than 4,000 higher education institutions participating in Erasmus+ across the 34 countries involved in the Erasmus+ programme and over 4 million Europeans took part to study, train, and gain experience abroad since the programme's inception.
Erasmus+ grants currently cover 34 countries as below: The Cyprus Institute was awarded ERASMUS Charter on 11 December 2013 and its ID Code is CY LEFKOSI02.

THE AIM OF ERASMUS+
The aim of Erasmus+ is to contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for growth, jobs, social equity and inclusion, as well as the aims of ET2020, the EU's strategic framework for education and training.
Erasmus+ also aims to promote the sustainable development of its partners in the field of higher education, and contribute to achieving the objectives of the EU Youth Strategy.
Specific issues tackled by the programme include:
• Reducing unemployment, especially among young people
• Promoting adult learning, especially for new skills and skills required by the labour market
• Encouraging young people to take part in European democracy
• Supporting innovation, cooperation and reform
• Reducing early school leaving
• Promoting cooperation and mobility with the EU's partner countries
ERASMUS+ STUDENT MOBILITY
One of its aims is to boost the skills and employability of university students by pursuing studies overseas for between three and 12 months, or traineeship for between two and 12 months. The mobility should take place in one of 33 countries in Europe and students receive a grant to help cover the cost of living and travel. Currently we have two student mobility openings available for the 2019-2020 academic year (see Student Mobility).
ERASMUS+ STAFF MOBILITY
Funding is available to help teachers, lecturers and non-academic staff develop their skills in schools, universities, colleges and adult education environments around 33 countries in Europe – through job shadowing, teaching and training activities. Currently we have four staff mobility openings available for the 2019-2020 academic year (see Staff Mobility).
HOW TO APPLY
Students and staff members who wish to participate in Erasmus mobility must fill in the Application Form
in response to Calls for Applications and submit it to the Office of Graduate Studies. The Erasmus Committee evaluates applications against the following selection criteria:
ERASMUS Selection Criteria
1) Relevance to studies/research/duties at CyI
2) Access to instrumentation/expertise not available at CyI, but available at the host institution
3) Between two candidates of equal merit, priority will be given to the applicant who has not yet benefitted from an Erasmus scheme.
4) Applicants choosing a host organization in their country of origin will be given lower priority in the selection process.
The Office of Graduate Studies will inform applicants of the decision of the ERASMUS Committee in writing. Subsequently, successful applicants must present written proof of an agreement before their mobility and no later than four months following the date of acceptance (e.g. Learning Agreement for Studies, Learning Agreement for Traineeship, Mobility Agreement for Teaching, Mobility Agreement for Training as appropriate).
The Erasmus Committee acts as a focal point for all ERAMUS+ related activities of CyI. It oversees activities under all three key actions: Learning Mobility of Individuals (KA1), Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices (KA2) and Support for policy reform (KA3).
Charge of the Committee
• Oversees and keeps abreast of calls for funding and the relevant regulations.
• Promotes and coordinates submission proposals for funding calls under ERASMUS+.
• Approves inter-institutional agreements under ERASMUS+ other institutions for collaboration in student and staff exchange as well as collaborations in proposals.
• Appraises applications for ERASMUS+ mobility based on the selection criteria set by the Academic Committee, ensuring a fair distribution in adherence to Erasmus Policy Statement.
• Arranges dissemination events and information days for ERAMSUS+.
• Cultivates relationship with National agency and builds ties and partnerships with other institutions for collaboration in proposals, and student and staff exchange.
