CyI and Aglantzia Municipality Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Improve Citizens’ Lives

On Thursday, 20th of May 2021, The Cyprus Institute (CyI) and the Municipality of Aglantzia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in common fields of activity, and to develop and organise actions that contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the local community.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at The Cyprus Institute’s premises in Athalassa. Signing the MoU on behalf of the Municipality of Aglantzia, was the Mayor, Mr. Andreas Constantinou, and on behalf of The Cyprus Institute, its President Prof. George Christophides. Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Harris Tsangarides, General Secretary of the Municipality, Dr Michalis Yiangou, Vice President for Operations, Prof. Salvatore Carlucci, Head of the Sustainability and Built Environment Division, and Dr Nicolas Jarraud, Assistant Vice-President for International Relations.

 “We are looking forward to a close cooperation with the Municipality of Aglantzia for the implementation of many actions regarding the promotion of green development and of a knowledge society”, Prof. Christophides noted. "The Municipality of Aglantzia is one of our most important and most valuable partners, and the formalization of our cooperation through this agreement will only further strengthen our relations", he added.

In his address, the Mayor of Aglantzia, Mr. Andreas Constantinou stated that with the formalization of the cooperation agreement, a great opportunity emerges. “The purpose of this agreement is to highlight the dynamics and expertise of The Cyprus Institute in proposing solutions and to contribute to the community and society at large”, he said.

Mr. Harris Tsangaridis, General Secretary of the Municipality, stated that access to The Cyprus Institute by the Municipality will be very positive and beneficial for both sides, as the Municipality will be able to organize joint activities and events under its auspice and utilize the scientific know-how for its future plans. Respectively, CyI will further contribute, and promote its activities to the community.

Dr Michalis Yiangou, Vice President for Operations of The Cyprus Institute, noted that part of the mission of The Cyprus Institute is to contribute and improve the conditions of society and especially the local community in all areas of its expertise, therefore CyI is ready to propose solutions and produce tangible results aimed at improving citizens lives.

With the MoU, The Cyprus Institute and the Municipality of Aglantzia, agree to pursue collaborative activities to promote information to the public on research and innovation issues, organise joint activities and events in scientific, social and cultural areas aimed at improving the quality of life of the local community, with the possibility of using Municipality venues for their location.

In addition, the collaboration aims to investigate joint participation in national and European programs on projects of common interest and on areas that can be supported by CyI’s research agenda. Finally, there was discussion on joint planning and implementation of green development actions within the context of the innovative “Green Campus” plan recently developed and proposed by The Cyprus Institute for its campus that could be extended to the wider area of ​​the Municipality of Aglantzia.
