CyI and the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment Sign MoU on Climate Change and Sustainable Development
On Tuesday October 22, 2019, the Cyprus Environment Commissioner, Ms. Ioanna Panayiotou, visited The Cyprus Institute on the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CyI and the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment.
Signing the MoU on behalf of the Office of the Commissioner of Environment, was the Commissioner Ms. Ioanna Panayiotou, and on behalf of The Cyprus Institute, CyI President Prof. Costas Papanicolas.
In his address, Prof. Papanicolas noted: “We formalize a long and successful collaboration that has provided tangible results. With today's signing, we are creating a new platform where we can achieve more in our areas of cooperation, such as tackling the effects of climate change, and protecting the environment”.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Panayiotou noted: “We have been working with The Cyprus Institute on climate change, renewable energy and management of natural resources, but also on promoting the seventeen points of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN), for which a local network will be established by The Cyprus Institute. Through this Memorandum, we are instituting even more actions for the good of our country's sustainable development and for the entire planet”.
With the signing of the MoU, CyI and the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment will cooperate in common fields of activity, including joint environmental awareness campaigns, and promoting of each party’s relevant activities and events.
Furthermore, this MoU signing will involve the Office of the Cyprus Environment Commissioner in the efforts of the Cyprus Research and Education Foundation (CREF) and The Cyprus Institute in establishing and developing a Cyprus Chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN), led by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who is a member of Τhe Cyprus Institute’s Board of Trustees. Finally, with the signing of the MoU, both organizations will explore the prospects for financing joint projects and activities through external national and European funding sources.
