Demetris Ioannides studied History and Archaeology (2011) at the University of Cyprus and awarded an MA in Material Culture and Artefact Studies (2013) from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. He received his doctoral title (PhD, 2022) by the University of Cyprus. His doctoral research focused on the compositional characterisation of Late Bronze Age metallurgical ceramic assemblages from Cyprus. To date, his PhD is the first systematic study of metallurgical ceramics from Cyprus.

He has worked in a number of interdisciplinary projects at the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus, including the MSCA-ITN "NARNIA" project (GA no. 265010), the A.G. Leventis Foundation funded projects "From the metalliferous sources to the citadel complex of Ancient Paphos" (2018-2019) and "An interdisciplinary study of Apliki, the most important copper mine of Late Bronze Age Cyprus and beyond" (2023-today). Since joining the Cyprus Institute (2023), Demetris has been working on the project “The Keros project” funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation.

Demetris' research interests mainly involve the production of copper and other base and precious metals from Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean as a means for: determining the nature of metallurgical processes taking place in the sites under examination (primary vs secondary operations); identifying the technical parameters of the operations (e.g. charge composition, temperature regime, redox conditions); evaluating the technological choices made by the ancient craftspeople in the selection of raw materials and the technical parameters that control a metallurgical operation; reconstructing the chaîne opératoire of metal production on an intra-site level and within its wider archaeological, cultural and geographical context.

He has authored and co-authored research papers in edited volumes and peer reviewed scientific journals, while he has participated in international and national  conferences with oral and poster presentations.
