Kick-off Meeting

On the 16th and 17th of May 2016 the Kick-off meeting of the Project, was held in Madrid. In the meeting, coordinated by CARSA (Consultoría de Automatización y Robótica S.A.), all nine Partner Organisations were represented. The Cyprus Institute was represented by Professor Despina Serghides, who is the scientific responsible of the project.

The proposal will investigate, implement and validate energy neutral ‘Smart Urban Isles’ (SUI), defined as ‘areas around public buildings, which make use of the synergies between different (building) functions and of the scale advantages for energy solutions’. The project is based on three complementary and integrated blocks: mini networks, bioclimatic and responsive building design and management platform. The aim is to locally balance the energy systems as much as possible and to probe Smart Urban Isle as innovative basic energy unit in the Smart City, in order to create a whole new urban planning concept, which allows cities to grow in a sustainable way.

During the meeting an Overview of the Project was made and the Partners presented their use cases, which will serve as case study investigation areas for the Project. The content and the requirements of the Work Packages were discussed, with special attention given to the Smart Urban Isle Concept and Scenarios definition. Furthermore, the action plan to be carried out before the next meeting was formulated.
